Performance Products
Our Performance Products Business Unit manufactures graphite electrodes for steel production
in electric arc furnaces. We also manufacture cathodes, which are used
in aluminium production as well as carbon electrodes for metallurgy. We
also produce furnace linings for crude iron production, which completes
our product portfolio.

Performance Products Business Unit:
 Graphite Electrodes
The core product of the Business Unit and the Group is graphite electrodes
for the recycling of steel in the electric arc furnace industry,
so called "mini-mills." We do not simply provide individual graphite
electrodes and nipples as stand alone products to our customers.
Rather, the focus is on the delivery of an entire "product system", supported
by sales and technical experts from the receipt of the customer's
order, throughout the entire production process, to final product
in the steel plants.
Cathodes
One of the important products of the Performance Products Business
Unit is cathode blocks for the lining of aluminum electrolysis cells.
Because we
also produce sidewall blocks, ramming pastes and special glues we
can offer a complete solution for our customers. Technical Service around our product range is an important element
of our strategy.
Carbon Electrodes
The production of silicon metal and phosphorus is an extremely specialized process
and therefore only a small number of companies are engaged in this business
worldwide. They are concentrated in areas where the electricity cost is
low and/or the availability of raw materials (quartz and phosphate
together with coal) is abundant: mainly North America, South America and
Europe.
Furnace Linings
The route blast furnace/BOF for production of high quality steel grades
is the most successful one of its kind. From present view this situation
will continue for the next 20-30 years, and EAF steel production has
to be seen separately and not as a competitor. The advantages of a
blast furnace are high reliability and constant pure metal quality.
At the beginning of the 60ies the refractory lining of the lower part
up to the middle stack of blast furnaces turned successfully to carbon
and graphite. SGL Group has actively attended this development. The
progress in this area together with a deeper understanding of the
process and advanced control systems has led to an enormous increase
in productivity and lifetime of the furnaces. SGL Group has been
an expert partner in the steel industry since the start and is able
to cover all specific requirements for carbon and graphite materials
for blast furnace linings. Intensive R&D work keeps SGL Group a top
level. Engineering, design and technical service supervision are an
essential part of our philosophy.
