SGL Group – The Carbon Company – will attend the China Composites Expo 2016 at Shanghai World Expo Exhibition & Convention Center from August 31 to September 2, presenting new material developments and innovative carbon fiber-based product solutions and their applications.

Composites (especially material solutions based on carbon fibers) offer outstanding properties such as light weight, high durability, and corrosion resistance. These characteristics make them excellent materials for many new applications across a wide variety of industries from the automotive, aerospace, and wind energy sectors to other areas such as pressure vessel manufacture. Many developments focus on weight reduction, increasing the functionality of components, and optimizing material systems for use in large-scale production.

At the China Composites Expo 2016, SGL Group will exhibit SIGRAFIL® 50k and SIGRAFIL® 24k carbon fibers and their applications. For example, a pressure vessel with a metal liner reinforced with SIGRAPREG carbon fiber TowPreg will be featured. Typical applications from the automotive industry will also be on show, such as the CFRP B pillar for super sports cars.

Another highlight of the innovative product solutions to be presented by SGL Group is the range of different material options in the area of fiber-reinforced thermoplastics. These materials are available as both glass fiber-reinforced and carbon fiber-reinforced semi-finished products based on various polymers and offer significant inherent benefits, such as short cycle times, weldability, good recyclability, and ease of combination with other thermoplastic semi-finished products. One of these innovative material applications – a tape fabric produced from carbon fiber-reinforced polyamide – will be demonstrated using the example of a thermoformed front end.
