Getting up close and personal with technology during the holidays: Young female researchers visit SGL Carbon in Meitingen

From April 21 to 25, 12 young women had the opportunity to try their hand at operating machines at SGL Carbon in Meitingen, discover their technical talents, and get one step closer to their dream job.The research camp is one of several camp formats for career orientation, implemented by the educational initiative Technik – Zukunft in Bayern and financed by the Bavarian metal and electrical employers' associations bayme vbm and the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs.

Participants in the 2025 Research Camp at SGL Carbon and the Technische Hochschule (Technical University) were able to learn about technical apprenticeships and degree programs in a practical and playful way. They also tested their own skills and interests by working on a project assignment on the topic of “Carbon fibers – production, application, and sustainability.”

SGL Carbon and the Technische Hochschule (Technical University) Augsburg organized the camp together. “Young people are the pioneers of tomorrow for technical progress, innovation, and the sustainable use of our resources,” says Alexander Miehling, site manager at SGL Carbon in Meitingen. ”As a company with deep roots in the Augsburg region, it is important to us, and to me personally, to provide insight into our site and our innovative products and thus to spark interest, curiosity, and enthusiasm for technology and science. We are very much looking forward to welcoming the young researchers.”

“We are fully committed to the successful promotion of women in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics subjects. For our future, we need the skills of strong women in scientific professions,” says Prof. Dr. László Kovács, Vice President for Studies and Teaching at the THA.

The participants presented their experiences from their unique week at the camp to an audience of company representatives, patrons, parents, and the press at the closing event of the research camp. They can now look back on a unique holiday experience: “I thought it was great that we built something that we can use later on. During the week, I realized that I enjoy technology,” says 15-year-old Marie-Luisa. Lisa (17) was also enthusiastic: ”I thought it was great that the apprentices helped us. The company organized everything really well and showed us a lot. This allowed us to try out many of the work steps ourselves.”
