SGL Group – The Carbon Company – is taking part in the Experience Composites 2016 in Augsburg from September 21 to 23, where it will exhibit new material developments and innovative carbon fiber-based product solutions and their applications. This new fair for fiber composites and lightweight design is being held for the first time in Augsburg and will present innovations, ideas, projects, start-up initiatives, and potential applications for fiber composite materials.

From current applications to new material hybrids

Among the exhibits on its booth in hall 1, SGL Group will be featuring “Carbon Core” elements used for the body structure of the new BMW 7 series – an impressive example of the innovative use of composites. In this serial application, carbon fiber-based braids from SGL Group are used in combination with aluminum in the roof frames of the new model series. The braids are produced by SGL Group in a fully automated process and then supplied directly to the BMW Group as preforms for component manufacture.

In the so-called “innovation area” of the Show in hall 3, SGL Group will also be demonstrating smart material hybrid concepts that point up specific new possibilities for the combined use of different materials in automotive engineering of the future. Among the innovations exhibited here will be pre-impregnated fiber bundles, the SIGRAPREG® TowPregs based on 50k continuous carbon fiber tow. These are particularly suitable for automated production processes because of their width stability and excellent winding behavior. They can also be combined, for example, with new rapid-curing prepreg resin systems, such as the “snap cure” epoxy resin system recently developed by SGL Group, which offers the advantages of rapid curing times (< 3 minutes at 150°C) and good storage stability. The pre-impregnated semi-finished products also have optimized tack for automated processing. Another highlight of the innovative product solutions presented by SGL Group is the range of different material options in the area of fiber-reinforced thermoplastics. These include tapes, sheets, and LFT, which permit very fast cycles, easy weldability, and good recyclability.

Excursion to SGL Group in Meitingen, award ceremonies, technical discussions

As part of the program of the fair, visitors will also have the opportunity to join a tour to SGL Group’s largest site in Meitingen on September 21. This is where both the composites division and the global research and development are based. All other divisions of the company also have production facilities here. During the tour of the site, visitors will gain an insight into the diversity of SGL Group with its various products and applications.

In addition, SGL Group will be participating in various award ceremonies and technical discussions taking place on the fringe of the fair.

These include, for example, a start-up competition. The aim of this competition is to encourage innovation and entrepreneurship in the area of fiber composite materials. Dr. Gerd Wingefeld, Chief Technology Officer of SGL Group, will be on the competition jury and will also present the awards to the winners on September 21 in Augsburg.

On the same day, Dr. Tilo Hauke, Head of Research and Development at SGL Group, will present the Carbon Composites Association (CCeV) Thesis Award to the winners. The CCeV Thesis Awards are given in recognition of innovative theses (Bachelor’s + Master’s) in the area of composites. They are being awarded for the third time. This year, 12 graduates have applied.

Furthermore, SGL Group will be participating in the technical discussions with, among other contributions, a presentation on the subject of pre-impregnated material systems for automobile production to be given on Sepember 21 by Dr. Andreas Erber, Head of SGL Group’s Lightweight and Application Center, which is currently being set up.
