As part of the special exhibition entitled “Carbon – The Material of the Future” at the State Textile and Industry Museum (tim) in Augsburg from June 22 to November 6, 2016, SGL Group – The Carbon Company – has provided a host of selected, carbon fiber-based exhibits on various themes such as the application industries of automobile engineering and aviation as well as the key topic of raw materials. For instance, visitors to the exhibition have the opportunity to see a Formula 1 brake disk made of carbon material, a side panel of the new Audi R8, and various components of the BMW i3 made from carbon fiber-reinforced plastic up close.
In addition, the SGL Group exhibits illustrate the manufacturing process of carbon fibers, and show the various types of fibers and intermediate products such as multi-layered lattices and woven fabrics.
Dr. Markus Partik, head of the SGL site in Meitingen, commented: “We are delighted to help the Textile and Industry Museum in Augsburg introduce its visitors to all the facets and potential applications of the carbon. The exhibition at the tim impressively demonstrates that carbon fibers and composites have already become part of our daily lives, and how much potential they have.”
Meitingen is home to the biggest SGL Group site in the world. A wide range of products and solutions involving carbon and graphite are manufactured, processed, and enhanced there. The company’s central research facility is also based in Meitingen. In addition, at the beginning of the year, the site became the head office of the “Composites – Fibers and Materials” (CFM) business unit, where all activities involving fibers and materials for composites are bundled. In a parallel move, a dedicated lightweight construction and application center is also being built at the SGL site. It will provide SGL Group customers with comprehensive advice on the optimum use of composites.
