
RedoxWind: Battery of unprecedented dimensions
Electrolyte tanks belonging to the energy storage system in Pfinztal, near Karlsruhe, each holding 45,000 liters. The 20 MWh system, run by the Fraunhofer Institute for Chemical Technology and equipped with SGL Carbon's SIGRACELL® felt electrodes and bipolar plates is part of the RedoxWind project supported by the German federal state of Baden-Wurttemberg and the Federal Ministry of Education and Research.

SGL Carbon is one of the leading manufacturers of specialty graphite and graphite components for redox flow batteries. We have incorporated our more than 20 years of experience and close cooperation with our customers into the development of our SIGRACELL battery felts and bipolar plates. By continuously improving our materials, we significantly increase the performance and service life of our customers' batteries.
Optimizing performance through felt quality
Inhomogeneity in the battery felt can lead to impermeable areas that reduce overall system performance. As a result, we are continuously working on tighter tolerances for the area weight and thickness of our battery felts. This helps our customers optimize compression rates, thus ensuring the best possible battery performance.
Expanded graphite bipolar plates are true all-rounders
In addition to their well-known high electrical conductivity and excellent corrosion resistance, expanded graphite bipolar plates offer even more benefits, some of them being directly linked to their non-resin impregnated, soft surface. These properties provide a competitive edge: They include high adaptability, surface tolerance, compressibility, sealability, and processability. These properties are inherent to flexible graphite. They are preserved in expanded graphite BPP, too, i. e. remain unchanged during the BPP production process.

Materials
Our SIGRACELL expanded graphite products and felts are used as permeable electrodes or current collectors in various types of batteries, including redox flow, sodium-sulfur, and ZEBRA batteries.
Our thin, high-density SIGRACELL bipolar plates, made of expanded natural graphite, are suitable for a wide range of battery and other electrochemical applications. The same is true for our flexible graphite foils, which are suitable as excellent current collectors.
