To produce SIGRATHERM L lightweight graphite boards we use carefully selected natural graphite, which is first mixed with an intercalation agent and then thermally expanded.
In natural graphite, the pure carbon layers lie parallel to one another. Along these flakes heat and cold are ideally transported. The expansion process further enhances this property: the volume of the small graphite flakes increases by a factor of 200 to 400, the density and the weight decrease. At the same time, the thermal conductivity improves during compression to boards. Both features can be controlled in the production in a targeted way - a great advantage in the application of SIGRATHERM L.
SIGRATHERM L is easy to process and can be cut or assembled without special tooling. The boards are available in various dimensions and densities. Low contents of halogens and sulfur (< 200 ppm each) avoid corrosion caused by impurities as good as possible.
Due to its high compressibility various thermo-dynamic structural components can be embedded into the material.
The one-sided lamination of SIGRATHERM L sheets with a nonwoven fabric provides an additional benefit for our customers: The lightweight graphite board becomes more stable and thus easier to handle. Otherwise, SIGRATHERM LN sheets possess the same excellent properties as the non-laminated boards.
SIGRATHERM L is used e.g. in electronic and power device cooling applications as well as in combination with a phase change material in thermal energy storage (heat or cold) for automotive or food processing applications (Link to graphite/PCM composite material page). Also, applications in the field of electrical conductivity enhancement benefit from SIGRATHERM L’s excellent material properties.
